That communication device actually has several functions beyond just talking to people over video --- you can also use it to get more information on the Pokemon you encounter, so that might provide an answer to that first question of yours.

You can check it in your Gear. It'll show your Pokemon's profile, what attacks it has, and its gender. Some Pokemon have gendered differences in their appearance, Duskull isn't one of them.
